Samantha began riding at the age of four and shortly after began competing in local hunter/jumper shows. She knew that she loved riding, but it wasn’t until she watched the 1984 Olympic Three-Day Event on television that she knew which direction she wanted her riding to take. Samantha’s passion is Eventing as she enjoys the process and time it takes to be an impressive team with your horse in all three phases. She does also love the disciplines of Dressage and Show Jumping, and appreciates pleasure riding and enjoys going on a nice hack.
When Samantha was ten her life as a trainer began to take shape. She began breaking Welsh ponies and gaining valuable experience exercising and helping to care for polo ponies. At age thirteen, Samantha moved to Ohio where she helped her mother run a 20 stall boarding and training facility. Her duties included chores, teaching, training, and also competing the school horses. At age fifteen, Samantha moved to Southern Maryland where she worked at Genesis Farm. There she trained and showed a Morgan to national levels in the working hunter division and won the AMHA Hunt Seat Over Fences Gold Medal. In 1994 Samantha continued her education by spending the summer as a working student for Torrance Watkins.
Samantha has represented the Maryland Region several times at the United States Pony Club Championships for Combined Training, and was a member of their winning team in 1995. In that same year, Samantha earned her “A” rating in the USPC. After graduating out of Pony Club, Samantha continued to coach several teams for the Maryland Region at USPC Championships in both Combined Training and Show Jumping. Samantha has also served as a course designer at both the Maryland and Capital region show jumping rallies.
After many years of diligently working at the lower levels, Samantha finally had the horse and the support to enter her first CCI*. She placed ninth riding “Get the Hell Outta Dodge” at the Virginia CCI* in 2001. Later that same year, the pair placed sixth at the MSDCTA CCI* in Lexington, Kentucky. In October 2002, Samantha, riding the perfectly named “Every Wish,” won The Morven Park CCI* and won the award for Best Conditioned Horse at the same event. In June of 2005 Samantha and “Every Wish” completed the Stuart CIC** placing 3rd after dressage. The pair also successfully moved up to Advanced at the Millbrook Horse Trials in the summer of 2005. Samantha and “Every Wish” continued their wonderful partnership winning many horse trials and earning fifth in the intermediate division of the American Eventing Championships in the fall of 2005. Unfortunately due to a medical condition in the winter of 2006, “Every Wish” was returned to his owners to recover and was later sold. Samantha continued training her younger prospects and has been focusing on Scimitar, who has proven to be an excellent upper level horse.
Samantha has trained “Every Wish” through Advanced, “Get the Hell Outta Dodge” and “Scimitar” through Intermediate, “Sassy Lady Grey” and several others through Preliminary and countless horses through the lower levels of the sport. In addition to her busy competition schedule, she currently breaks and trains horses for eventing, dressage, show jumping, foxhunting, racing and pleasure riding.
Samantha is currently working with Susan Graham White, Sharon White and Jim Wofford. She has trained long term with; Torrance Watkins, Packy Mcgaughan, Nicky Vogel, Francis Nedzelia, Mary Reynolds, Michelle Sabol and Judy Hunt. She has cliniced with; Lucinda Green, Bonnie Mosser, David and Karen O’Connor, Phillip Dutton, Debbie Bowman, Mary Schwentker, Phyllis Dawson, Stewart Young-Black, Helmut Gratz, Micola Pablanco, Maj. Gen. Burton, and Col. Edwards.
